Our Projects

Some of our projects include:

CrowdSourced Sensing and Collaboration using Twitter

Despite the availability of the sensor and smartphone devices to fulfill the ubiquitous computing vision, the state-of-the-art has gap due to lack of infrastructure to task/utilize these devices for collaboration and coordination. We propose that Twitter can provide an “open” publish-subscribe infrastructure for sensors and smartphones, and pave the way for ubiquitous crowd-sourced sensing and collaboration applications. For more information see project page here.

Upinion: Identifying Breakpoints in Public Opinion

In this work, we consider the problem of identifying breakpoints in public opinion about certain topic. While traditional poll applications achieve this by providing a snapshot of public opinion, they can neither track temporal opinion changes nor capture opinions that are not asked in the questionnaire. In order to overcome difficulties of these applications, we propose to use Micro-blogs to capture changes in public opinion. For more information see project page here.

TRANSACT

This project is a programming framework for wireless sensor networks on Tmote Invent platform. TRANSACT framework provides reliable transaction-like semantics with serializability for WSNs. A TinyOS component that can be used for further application development is implemented. For more information see project page here.

PollCast

PollCast is a novel broadcast primitive for multi node coordination that utilizes collision information. It is implemented on the Tmote Invent platform. The CC2420 radio driver for TinyOS is modified to provide accurate collision detection required for this protocol. RSSI, clear channel assessment and CRC capabilities of CC2420 are combined in this work. For more information and downloads see project page here.

Data Salmon

This project investigates use of mobile basestations to improve performance and lifetime of WSNs. Data Salmon uses a static WSN which maintains a dynamic routing tree. This tree is utilized to guide mobile base station toward data (similar to persuer evader scenario). A java simulator and further details can be found in project page here.

Data Spider

This project improves upon Data Salmon in application of mobile basestations to WSNs. Data Spider relies on cooperation of static WSN and mobile basestation in order to maintain a dynamic routing tree. This tree guides mobile base station toward data and at the same time it is reconfigured for better routing. A java simulator and further details can be found in project page here.

Causataxis

In this project we studied mobile sensor deployment algorithms with distributed and hierarchical control. Causataxis algorithm provides hierarchical control and utilizes high level nodes that coordinate movement of lower level nodes and maintain an infrastructure for communication. In distributed control, a swarm algorithm is employed that only uses local information to provide comparable performance. A java applet demonstration and further details can be found in project page here.

Mobility Profiler

In this project, we focus on the problem of discovering mobility patterns and mobility profiles for mobile users from the cellphone-based location logs. We define the mobility path concept used for representing users travel path from one location to another location. The details of  this project can be found here.
